Dysfunctional mitochondria plays an important role in diseases such as cardiovascular disease and cancers. Therefore, the analysis of mitochondria is crucial to understand disease pathogenesis and develop new drugs. However, current mitochondrial extraction methods significantly deteriorate the quality of mitochondria.

Herein, we developed a microscale cell shredder device where we can selectively break the outer cell membrane only, without disrupting the mitochondria inside the cell by microfluidics approach. By comparing to the Dounce Homogenizer and the Qproteome® Mitochondria Isolation Kit, our microscaled cell shredder can extract the same amount of mitochondria with fewer cells, less processing time and cost.
